Engineering surveying

Set-out, control and as-built checks for roads, rail, bridges, plants and buildings. Your crews get the right position to build to, and you get proof of what was built.

01

Route & Corridor Surveys

Map linear infrastructure routes such as roads, railways, and pipelines.

Method and deliverables

Technology

  • Mobile LiDAR systems for rapid corridor capture
  • UAV photogrammetry for aerial mapping
  • GNSS RTK & Total Stations for control point establishment

Deliverables

  • Plan and profile drawings
  • Cross-section data for design
  • Digital terrain models for alignment optimisation

Why it mattersIdentifies constraints early, supports optimal design, and reduces rework during construction.

02

Construction Set-Out (Engineering Layout)

Transfer detailed engineering designs onto the ground for construction crews.

Method and deliverables

Technology

  • Robotic Total Stations for high-speed, precise layout
  • GNSS RTK for large-scale works like dams or airports

Deliverables

  • Physical markers for foundations, anchor bolts, gridlines, and road centrelines
  • As-built coordinates for QA

Why it mattersEnsures infrastructure is built exactly to design specifications, minimising costly errors.

03

Control Networks & Benchmarks

Create a permanent framework of reference points for all measurements during the project lifecycle.

Method and deliverables

Technology

  • Dual-frequency GNSS receivers for high-accuracy positioning
  • Precise levelling instruments for elevation control

Deliverables

  • Control coordinate register
  • Benchmark descriptions and site maps

Why it mattersGuarantees consistency and accuracy across multi-phase projects.

04

Topographic & Utility Surveys

Map existing terrain and utilities before construction.

Method and deliverables

Technology

  • UAV mapping and LiDAR scanning for surface features
  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) for underground utilities

Deliverables

  • Contour maps and feature plans
  • Utility GIS layers and CAD drawings

Why it mattersReduces the risk of damaging underground services and allows designs to fit in with existing infrastructure.

Method and deliverables

Technology

  • 3D laser scanners for structural verification
  • Total Stations for positional accuracy checks

Deliverables

  • CAD drawings overlaying as-built vs design
  • Deviation reports for compliance certification

Why it mattersRequired for project sign-off, warranty validation, and future maintenance.

07

3D Laser Scanning & Scan-to-BIM

Capture complex structures and environments in 3D for design integration or retrofits.

Method and deliverables

Technology

  • High-definition photogrammetry for visual detail
  • Terrestrial LiDAR scanners for millimetre precision

Deliverables

  • BIM-ready 3D models
  • Point clouds in industry-standard formats

Why it mattersSpeeds up design cycles, improves accuracy, and reduces site visits.

08

Aerial Mapping & Photogrammetry

Rapidly capture large or inaccessible project areas from the air.

Method and deliverables

Technology

  • Fixed-wing UAVs for large corridors
  • Multi-rotor UAVs for detailed site capture

Deliverables

  • Integration with CAD/GIS systems
  • Orthophotos, DSMs, and contour maps

Why it mattersEnables fast decision-making and reduces survey time on-site.

Questions

Engineering surveying: common questions

What is construction set-out?

Set-out transfers the engineering design onto the ground so crews know exactly where to build. We mark foundations, anchor bolts, gridlines and road centrelines with robotic total stations and GNSS RTK, then record as-built coordinates for QA.

What do you hand over after an as-built survey?

CAD drawings that overlay the as-built position on the design, plus deviation reports for compliance certification. These are needed for project sign-off, warranty validation and future maintenance.

Can you monitor movement in a structure?

Yes. We track movement in structures, embankments, bridges and high-rise buildings with automated total stations, GNSS monitoring, inclinometers and extensometers. You get movement trend graphs and early-warning alerts.

Where does Geovantage work?

We are based in Pretoria and have worked on sites in South Africa, Zambia, the DRC and Ethiopia.
