Overview

More than 15 years after it was rebuilt for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, FNB Stadium (also known as Soccer City) is still one of South Africa's best-known landmarks. The plan was to upgrade the inner field so it can host major sports events and large concerts. The design team first needed to know exactly what was there.

Scope of work

Geovantage was appointed to conduct a full as-built survey of the stadium's inner field and related infrastructure. This involved:

Providing high-accuracy data for engineering teams to plan safe, multi-purpose usage
Verifying existing structural elements for compatibility with new design requirements
Capturing the current geometry and elevations of the inner field area

Technology and deliverables

GNSS RTK Systems: for rapid, high-accuracy positioning along long corridors
Robotic Total Stations: for setting-out in areas with obstructions or tight tolerances
Digital Levels: for elevation control over extended distances

Outcome

The as-built survey gave the design team a complete, current dataset of the inner field, so the upgrades can be planned with confidence for safety, compliance and use by both sports and entertainment events.
